Monday 16th September 2019 saw the launch of Abercrombie’s Community Kitchen in the newly refurbished dining room space of the Folkestone Mind Resource Centre. Refreshments prepared by local social enterprise ‘Oh Crumbs!’ were enjoyed by all after a ribbon-cutting ceremony from our Patron, Mark Sargeant and the family of Rupert Abercrombie. The ceremony was a vibrant affair, alive with people wishing to celebrate this long-awaited venture. CEO Bernie delivered a welcoming speech, Director of Communications Adam introduced Patron Mark Sargeant, owner of award-winning restaurant Rocksalt, and explained Rupert’s legacy and how the Community Kitchen has come to fruition, and both Adam and Mark Sargeant were interviewed by local press. Rupert’s mother also said a few words.
Abercrombie’s Community Kitchen is open five days a week, from 10am to 2pm for tea, coffee, lunch and snacks, prepared by Val of ‘Oh Crumbs!’ It is operating as a public café, serving up a fixed price ‘Meal of the Day’ along with a vegetarian option and light bites.
Working with local social enterprise ‘Oh Crumbs!’ and fundraising for Folkestone Mind, Abercrombie’s provides a space for lunch, informal meetings, social groups, peer-led groups, workshops and cookery classes, alongside employment and training opportunities for people recovering from mental health problems.
Abercrombie’s also offers a Community Cookery Library where you can bring and borrow recipe books, cookbooks and baking ideas.
The opening ceremony marked the beginning of a huge opportunity for Folkestone Mind and ‘Oh Crumbs!’ and a lasting memory of former FDM member Rupert Abercrombie.
